Press and Lots of New Raffle Items!

While you're out there on the interwebs, be sure to check out our feature story at RVANews.com, written by Marge Weiner!  She spoke with both Brian Gearing, the event organizer, and Sam Verrill, the print series curator, about the event and the mission behind it, and churned out an excellent piece.  Check it out here!

Also, if you're in Richmond, be sure to pick up a copy of Brick Weekly, which also featured a full-page story on Screens 'N' Suds written by Jennifer Hansen.  And if you're coming through town this weekend, are here full-time, or are going to be in RVA sometime between now and Christmas, make sure to stop by Frame Warehouse at 5709 W Broad St and check out the Concert Poster Show there featuring both posters and originals by Emek, Jermaine Rogers, Tara McPherson, Marq Spusta, Drowning Creek, Jeral Tidwell and many, many more!

On a final note on the eve of the event, raffle items are pouring in!   At the moment, we've got the previously mentioned framed "I Walk the Pines" print by Punchgut Studio, the framed Richard Biffle Christmas Jam poster signed by Warren Haynes, as well as 2 gift certificates for custom framing from Frame Warehouse, a $50 gift certificate from Mekong restaurant, a gift certificate to Wine and Beer Westpark, a gift certificate to Frame Nation in Shockoe Bottom, a Plan9 gift certificate, t-shirts, beer schwag and lots, lots more.  Make sure you buy a raffle ticket (or a few) at the event.  All money will be split between the MS Society and Young Audiences of Virginia.

And remember, tickets are still available HERE and at Frame Warehouse and Plan9 in Richmond!  Cash will also be accepted at the door, and please remember to bring cash for poster purchases.  There will be the possibility of credit card purchases, but cash makes it easier on everyone.  See you tomorrow at the Capital Ale House Downtown!!!!!!

Music at Screens 'N' Suds

So by now, we all know...Screens 'N' Suds = beer 'n' posters, right?  Absolutely!  But there will also be some great music provided by some of Richmond's best talent.

DJ Lightning's Girl and Kenny will kick things off when the doors open at 11.  In the last couple years, she has become one of Richmond's most sought after DJs, and her all-girl DJ Group, Cherry Bomb, knocks the doors off Cous Cous every week.  For a little taste of what the early birds will be in for (in addition to the first pick of the poster goodness), check out her show with DJ Alex Kurth tonight from 7-9 on WRIR.  You can stream the show here: wrir.serverroom.us:7722/wrir.m3u.

Next
up will be Richmond's very own one-man street band, Gull.  Otherwise known as that guy with the mask.  Cruise the streets of Richmond on a weekday, or perhaps for an artwalk, and chances are you'll run into this four-limbed phenomenon.  Just one man, a drum kit and a guitar.  Check out his music on MySpace.

Last but not least will be alt-jazz duo Illbrain.  Mixing samples with keyboard hooks and adventurous drums, they'll have the room grooving and swaying from 3:30 to close.  They're also at MySpace.

Of course, during the breaks, everyone will be treated to The Gig Gallery's greatest hits, taken from every corner of the musical encyclopedia: classic rock, hip hop, electronic, indie, alternative, R&B and more, all to make you bang your head and shake your hips while your eyes feast upon some of the best rock art out there.

Remember, tickets are available HERE and at Plan9 and Frame Warehouse in Richmond.  $5 admission will be accepted at the door as well.  Cash only, please.

Andrew Stronge Screenprinting Video

Ever wonder how it's done?  Obviously, there are about a million different methods, involving squeegees, screens, ink, racks, machines, hands, feet, and all kinds of other apparati, but check out this video by Andrew Stronge to see one way it's done.  These prints will be available at the event this Saturday at the Capital Ale House Downtown in Richmond, VA and afterward here at ScreensNSuds.com.  Buy your tickets HERE or at Frame Warehouse or Plan9 in Richmond to check out these prints in person!  Remember...all sales of the print series go to benefit the MS Society!

Check out Andrew's video at YouTube, or on the Facebook Screens 'N' Suds group page!  And while you're at it, join the group and RSVP to the event!

Screens 'N' Suds Artist Profile: Richard Biffle

As I discovered with our little 11/7 experiment, Richard Biffle is a man of few words, but for the last decade, his work has spoken for itself.  In addition to his poster and graphic work for The Black Crowes, Gov't Mule, the extended Dead family and others, Richard has done some of the best fantasy illustration out there.  We are very excited to have him at Screens 'N' Suds, and hope that you'll feel the same way on Saturday.  Get your tickets HERE or at Frame Warehouse and Plan9 in Richmond!

Screens 'N' Suds Artist Profile: Andrew Stronge

Today's profiled artist is Andrew Stronge, who is just beginning to break into the poster scene, but has been hard at work getting prints ready for the Screens 'N' Suds event.  Andrew was even nice enough to hand-print the tickets!

1.  Where do you live and work?

Palmyra, VA but I workin Charlottesville, VA at a screen printing shop called Crazy Horse Studio.

2. When and how did you get into making posters?

Posters are a new thing for me, I've only recently started to have people ask for them.  It's a fun, new, interesting process that I like because it makes each print unique in its own way.  That way you're getting an original piece without having to spend an arm and a leg to get it.

3. What's your favorite poster you've ever done?

Well I haven't honestly done enough to have a favorite yet.

4. What is your favorite posters someone else has done?

Way too many to choose from, just too hard to choose.

5. If you could only do one more poster, what band would you choose?

Smashing Pumpkins

6. Describe your creative process for posters.

I start out by brainstorming up ideas in my head of what my theme will be etc.  Then I start sketching out things that are relative to the topic.  As I start seeing things on paper, new ideas and even flaws in my own original idea come to light.  Eventually I get a solid idea and start mocking it up.

7. What artist inspired you to get into posters?

Once again, too many to pick from.

8. What's the first album you remember loving?

Green Day "Dookie"

9. What was the last concert/show you went to?

Ingrid Michaelson

10. What is your favorite beer?

Heineken

11.  If you gotta go cheap, what's your beer pick?
        Water

1. Superman or Batman?
Batman
2. Pizza, burgers, or tacos?
Pizza
3. John, Paul, George or Ringo?
Paul
4. Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi
5.  Frozen or on the rocks?
Rocks
6. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or 00s?
80s
7.  Larry or Balki?
Never watched Perfect Strangers, and yes I had to Google it.
(and yet the 80s were his favorite decade...?)
